What to Do After a Hail Storm Hits Your Roof

What Hail Does to a Roof

Hail does not have to be big to matter. A hail strike knocks the granules off the shingle and bruises the mat underneath, and the spot goes soft. You cannot see it from the ground.

We find it by walking the roof. Jake points out the hail damage he finds and marks a few hits in chalk. That is why you have us look before you file.

After the last big hailstorm we had crews from California, Montana, Iowa and Nebraska calling to ask for work. We are not stormers, and we only use our main crew.

Five Things to Know After a Hail Storm

Read these before anyone knocks on your door.

Do not sign anything a door knocker hands you. It is a contingency agreement. With a contingency agreement, they want to meet your adjuster to help point out hail damage, and if you do not hire them, they want 20% of the claim total. It is high pressure, and there is no dollar amount on it. If you have already signed something, do not let them meet the adjuster.
Take your time. After you file a claim, you have six months or one year, depending on your policy, to get the work done, or you lose the recoverable depreciation, if applicable. Storm chasers, the sales people and the crews, will not want to wait months, and they may be from out of state.
Check the truck. Some storm chasers get a mailbox at a postal annex, call it a suite, and get local phone numbers to look like they are from here. Walk out to their truck and look at the license plate. Do the same with the crews.
Never give a contractor money to start. Supply houses give us a 30 day float. A company worth its salt can handle that, and we need no money to start.
Get the mortgage company right. Make sure the adjuster has the correct mortgage company when they inspect. Most insurance checks list the mortgage company, so get it right the first time.
